GLOVERS FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Yeovil Town 3, Hayes 0 - March 24,2001

WELCOME to the Glovers Flashback Friday feature where we look back at a Yeovil Town game on this day in history from down the years.

Today we go back 16 years to March 24, 2001, and Yeovil Town’s important 3-0 win over Hayes at Huish Park in the Nationwide Conference.

It was an important win as Yeovil, who were leading the Conference, were beginning to stutter in their bid for title success.

A crowd of 3,206 turned up at Huish Park to see an own goal and a Paul Steele effort give Yeovil a 2-0 half-time lead, which was cemented shortly after the break on 50 minutes when Barrington Belgrave put the Glovers 3-0 up.

The match was played on a very heavy pitch and probably only went ahead because the Sky TV cameras were at the game to show the game live.

Yeovil keeper Tony Pennock produced a couple of his customary fantastic saves during the match which had made him such a big favourite with the Huish Park fans.

But the 3-0 win turned out to be all in vain that 2000-01 season as Yeovil manager Colin Addison, who had taken over the Huish Park helm from David Webb earlier in the campaign, watched his side falter in too many games in the closing weeks and they finished runners-up to eventual champions Rushden and Diamonds.

Addison resigned from the manager’s seat immediately after the final game of the season which Yeovil lost 1-0 at home to Scarborough.

Highest appearance makers during the 2000-01 season were Nick Crittenden with 54, Darren Way with 51 and Barrington Belgrave and Tony Pennock with 50, while David Piper made 48.

Warren Patmore topped the goal scoring chart for Yeovil during the season with 22, while Darren Way chipped in with 12 and Barrington Belgrave hit ten. James Bent and Nick Crittenden scored seven apiece.
