Football: Tom Cruise pays the penalty in Yeovil Town cup drama

YEOVIL Town edged through to the Third Round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy competition tonight (Tuesday, October 16) with a dramatic penalty shootout victory at Torquay United.

The Glovers looked to be heading out of the competition when they were trailing 2-1 going into added time at the end of 90 minutes.

But then up-popped James Hayter to pull Yeovil level and, as a result, into a nervous penalty shootout with there being no extra-time.

Yeovil, who have not had the best of records with spot-kicks down the years, netted all five of theirs to win 5-4 on penalties with the unfortunate Tom Cruise seeing his penalty for Torquay saved by Glovers' keeper Marek Stech.

On the spot for Yeovil were James Hayter, Ed Upson, Gavin Williams, skipper Jamie McAllister and Keanu Marsh-Brown with the all-important match-winning fifth.

Yeovil will probably count themselves fortunate that they made it through to the Third Round where they will face Wycombe Wanderers at Huish Park in the first week in December.

Torquay led twice during the 90 minutes with Ryan Jarvis netting a brace, but on both occasions Hayter levelled for the Glovers in each half.

The penalty victory will give Yeovil renewed confidence going into this Saturday's npower League One clash with Bury at Huish Park.

More importantly, however, despite Yeovil not performing to their best, tonight's cup game could be a turning point in their season.

Could the penalty success at Plainmoor give Yeovil the belief? Time will tell...
