GLOVERS NEWS: Phew – vital win for Yeovil Town

YEOVIL Town enjoyed a very rare and very much-needed victory on Monday (April 17, 2017) which eased their fears of being sucked into the relegation zone of the Sky Bet League Two table.

First-half goals from Matty Dolan and Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro put the Glovers in control at Huish Park against fellow strugglers Crewe Alexandra before Otis Khan made it 3-0 to Yeovil midway through the second period.

It was an advantage which they were able to hold until the final whistle and with results from around the country also going their way – everyone at Yeovil Town could breathe a large sigh of relief at winning a crunch match, that the side had not thrown away a three-goal lead as they had done so a few weeks previously at Exeter City and that they had clawed themselves to within touching distance of League Two safety.

Admittedly, the fear of relegation has not been totally extinguished, but with just three games to go and seven points clear of the League Two trap door; things looked on Monday evening a whole lot better than they did on Friday (April 14, 2017) following a dreadful 1-0 defeat at Newport County left them just four points above the relegation zone.GLOVERS NEWS: Phew – vital win for Yeovil Town Photo 1

While Yeovil won against Crewe, their rivals at the bottom of the table did not have an afternoon to remember.

Newport County’s revival was derailed at Plymouth Argyle, while Hartlepool United went down at all-but-relegated Leyton Orient.

The only fly in the ointment which put further pressure on Yeovil ahead of the 3pm start was that Cheltenham Town enjoyed a victory over Grimsby in an early kick-off.

Yeovil opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark when Matty Dolan netted a left-footed free-kick into the top right corner of the net.

The Glovers doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro headed home from the centre of the box.

Francois Zoko saw a header rebound off the bar on 70 minutes, but Otis Khan scored from close range to put Yeovil 3-0 up.

Yeovil’s victory does not paper over the cracks or hides the fact that it was only their third three-point haul in 24 League Two outings and the win was against a below-par Crewe team, but who cares? It was a vital victory for the Glovers.

The League Two table looks like this following Monday's matches. The bottom two teams will be relegated at the end of the 46-match season.
