GLOVERS NEWS: Yeovil Town’s atrocious run of form continues and now hover nervously over drop zone

YEOVIL Town fell to another damaging defeat on Friday (April 14, 2017) when they lost 1-0 at fellow strugglers Newport County and now find themselves in the thick of a real dogfight to avoid relegation.

The Glovers are now just four points off the drop zone in the Sky Bet League Two and have just four games in which to salvage something from an abysmal season.

The only goal of the game came on 57 minutes when Mickey Demetriou converted his free-kick past Yeovil keeper Jonny Maddison who was making his league debut for the Glovers due an injury to regular number one Artur Krysiak.

Newport, to be fair, looked the better of the two sides and were dominant against a lacklustre Yeovil who just do not look as if they are at the races.

Yeovil had a couple of chances to have found the target, one of which saw substitute Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro get a whack on the nose for his troubles and he had to leave the pitch for about five minutes which reduced the Glovers to ten men.

Yeovil skipper for the day Nathan Smith, making his 250th appearance for the club, nearly grabbed a dramatic late equaliser but his header went over the bar.

The latest defeat means Yeovil Town boss Darren Way has now won just two games in his side’s last 23 League Two fixtures – that equates to half a season. Better managers than Darren Way have been sacked for less.

There are growing calls on social media among fans for Way – along with his assistant Terry Skiverton – to go plus a big shakeup in the boardroom.GLOVERS NEWS: Yeovil Town’s atrocious run of form continues and now hover nervously over drop zone Photo 2

But will the board look to show Way and Skiverton the exit door with just four games to go which will decide whether Yeovil Town are in the Football League or back in non-league football come August this year? Probably not.

But what is without question – Yeovil fans could be in for some tense moments in the final few weeks of this season.

While good runs in the closing weeks of a season can propel a top ten team up into the play-offs, a bad run of form can see a mid-table team slide down the slippery slope into the relegation zone.

Yeovil are very much on that slippery slope and desperately need to make it three wins from 24 games come the end of play on Monday (April 17, 2017) when they face 18th-placed Crewe Alexandra at Huish Park.

The bottom of the League Two table looks like this - with the teams finishing the season (46 games) in 23rd and 24th being relegated.
