GLOVERS NEWS: Yeovil Town suffer another defeat and slip to 20th in League Two

THE poor run of results which have seen Yeovil Town propel down the League Two table continued on Saturday (April 8, 2017) at promotion chasing Portsmouth.

A 3-1 defeat means Yeovil have now won just two out of 18 Sky Bet League Two fixtures in 2017 or just four out of 26 league games stretching back to the start of November 2016.

Fans on social media have been quick to point out that those of sort of statistics are worse than the sequence of results which cost Paul Sturrock the manager’s job at Huish Park in the 2015-16 campaign.

The result saw Yeovil slip to 20th spot in the League Two table with 46 points from 41 games – but the gap at the bottom has narrowed with Newport County winning 1-0 at Exeter City. With troubled basement side Leyton Orient all but relegated, attention is now firmly fixed on the second relegation spot of 23rd, currently filled by Newport.

Yeovil are now seven points ahead of Newport, but travel over the Severn Bridge on Good Friday (April 14, 2017) for a crucial “six-pointer” against County.

A win for Yeovil would be a massive result and put their League Two future for another season virtually within touching distance with four games to go, but a defeat would see Newport move to within four points of the Glovers.

If the latter happened Yeovil would suddenly find themselves very much in a relegation battle until the end of the season and the “young players” that are often talked about by Glovers’ boss Darren Way (pictured above) would have to step up to the plate rapidly and ensure that Yeovil stay out of the bottom two.GLOVERS NEWS: Yeovil Town suffer another defeat and slip to 20th in League Two Photo 2

Also looking over their shoulder at Newport with even bigger eyes of fear will be Cheltenham Town (21st) and Hartlepool United (22nd) who are on 43 and 42 points respectively.

But back to Yeovil’s 15th defeat of the season at Portsmouth on Saturday (April 8, 2017).

Pompey opened the scoring on 15 minutes from the penalty spot when Gareth Evans netted past Yeovil keeper Artur Krysiak.

Yeovil’s travelling fans were given hope when Francois Zoko, although it looked a possible own goal, levelled the scores shortly after the start of the second period.

But Portsmouth, who dominated proceedings for long spells, upped the tempo and pressure and got their just rewards when they regained the initiative through Kai Naismith and then Jamal Lowe made sure of the victory when he put Pompey 3-1 up on 78 minutes.

Yeovil can have no complaints about the result – Pompey had 61 per cent of the possession and had 18 shots on target as opposed to the Glovers’ meagre five.

On the plus side for Yeovil winger Otis Khan made a return to playing duty after a long lay-off due to injury when he came on for the final 20 minutes, while another recent absentee, defender Nathan Smith, also got a decent 33-minute run-out also back from injury.
