GLOVERS NEWS: They say football is a funny old game – certainly not on this occasion for Yeovil Town

YEOVIL Town suffered arguably one of their most depressing afternoons in their Football League history on Saturday (March 25, 2017) – although they returned from West Country rivals Exeter City with a point.

But the Glovers should have been making the short journey back to South Somerset with all three points safely deposited in the bag – full stop!

Yeovil were cruising to victory 3-0 up and looking comfortable as the game ticked over to 88 minutes.

But then Exeter staged one of those remarkable comebacks which will be talked about long into the night by their supporters.

David Wheeler got one back for Exeter on 88 minutes with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box, but with the score 3-1 to Yeovil it looked like a token gesture.

But with the game having entered stoppage time Exeter began to believe when they reduced the deficit to 3-2 when Troy Brown netted.

And a minute later the amazing turnaround had been completed by the Grecians when substitute Reuben Reid, an ex-Yeovil player himself, scored to send the Exeter fans into jubilation as they had really come back from the dead.

The Yeovil players should hang their heads in shame.

But things had looked so much better just a few minutes before when they were 3-0 up and on their way to a three-point haul which would have virtually assured them League Two safety.

Francois Zoko gave Yeovil the lead on 62 minutes and then Shayon Harrison doubled the Glovers’ lead with a header on 70 minutes.

The supposed match-winner was then converted on 78 minutes when Alex Lacey headed home from close range to put Yeovil 3-0 up.

The Yeovil fans celebrated, the Exeter fans could see their play-off hopes suffering a dent.

But then Exeter sprang into life…..football can be a funny old game.

But there was nothing funny about what was to happen to Yeovil on a hugely disappointing afternoon.

The game may have finished 3-3, but it will go down as one of the worst results in the club’s Football League history considering how the match had panned out.

It was also Yeovil’s 16th League Two draw this season – the most draws the Glovers have ever achieved in a campaign since joining the Football League in 2003-04.

The result also saw Yeovil slip to 18th in the table with 46 points from 39 games played, while Exeter remained seventh and in the play-offs.
