Football: Yeovil Town v Derby County: Wayne can’t wait for Saturday!

NEW Yeovil Town goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey cannot wait to make his debut for the club on Saturday (August 24, 2013) when they take on Derby County at Huish Park.

It has been an interesting fortnight for the Glovers since regular number one Marek Stech went off injured in their previous home game on August 10 with Birmingham City.

Goalkeeping coach Gareth Stewart replaced Stech on that occasion for the remainder of the game with the Blues; then Wolves and Wales keeper Hennessey was lined-up to come in on loan, but that was ruled out when he got himself injured in a pre-match warm-up last week; so in came Manchester United starlet Sam Johnstone for Yeovil’s game at Burnley last weekend, while the Glovers also signed former Northampton Town and Coventry City stopper Chris Dunn.Football: Yeovil Town v DerbyCounty: Wayne can’t wait for Saturday!

But then Johnstone, 26, himself got injured in the warm-up before the Burnley game and despite soldiering on in the 2-0 defeat he has had his loan spell torn up and returned to Old Trafford; and now Hennessey has finally arrived at Huish Park after his knee injury sorted itself out.

No wonder Hennessey asked the media today at HuishPark – what is the drama here with keepers?

But Hennessey said: “I feel really good and I can’t wait for Saturday.

“I have met the lads and staff. I’ve never played here before, so I’m really looking forward to the game with Derby.”

“You can actually pick up a lot in a few sessions,” he said. “Most footballers like watching footballers so you can pick things up.

Hennessey said it was a “fantastic” opportunity for him to get some much-needed match practice under his belt and try and reclaim the number one spot in the Welsh international team.

He has been severely hampered by injury in recent years when he suffered a torn cruciate knee ligament in April 2012.

He returned later that year, but suffered another knee injury in November of that year which kept him out for the remainder of the 2012-13 season.

Hennessey is now back, however, despite last week’s injury scare, and is raring to go with Yeovil.

But he admitted that he would be “tucking himself away” between now and kick-off on Saturday to make sure there is not any fresh goalkeeper injury woe for the Glovers.
