Athletics: Yeovil students do Somerset proud

THREE Yeovil College students have represented Somerset at the English Schools Athletics Association (ESAA) Championships in Exeter.

The college’s representation in the Somerset squad would have been four, but one was sadly unable to compete due to injury.

The students all train with Yeovil College’s Athletics Academy and combine their training with a variety of courses.Yeovil students do Somerset proud

BTEC (Level 3) Sport & Exercise Science student Dan Ogden, 17, took the gold medal in the hammer, while A-Level student Daniel Huntley, 17, came second in the pole vault.

Construction student Brendan England-Frost, 17, competed in the 110m hurdles, receiving the bronze medal, and also the high jump, coming fourth.  Sadly Ollie Pilton, 18, who is studying A-Levels at Yeovil College, was unable to compete due to injury.

The students, all from Yeovil, were selected for the Senior Boys competition after success at the Somerset County Championships.

Yeovil College curriculum and quality manager, Matt Hann, said: “Yeovil College has an outstanding track record for nurturing sporting talent.

“Ollie, Daniel, Brendan and Dan have worked with their specialist coaches, Andrew Holmes, Andrew Roda and the late Bill Whistlecroft, throughout the year and have put in some very good performances.

“We’re delighted that their ability was recognised and that they were selected to represent Somerset in these events.

“They’ve progressed through the Yeovil Area Championships and the Somerset Championships to get there, so it’s a very good achievement for all involved.”

Matt added: “Although Ollie was unable to compete in this competition, he shone at the Somerset County Combined Events, recording a record time in the 110m hurdles which placed him fourth fastest for U20s in the country. All the students put in a lot of hard work and dedication to their sport and deserve to compete at this level.”
