Football: New signing Hoskins looking forward to Yeovil Town challenge

NEW Yeovil Town striker Sam Hoskins is looking forward to battling for a place in the Glovers’ starting line-up with fellow frontmen Paddy Madden and James Hayter.

It was announced yesterday that Hoskins, 20, had signed for the Glovers after being released from Southampton having come up through the Saints’ academy system.

And Hoskins is already looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead of him in The Championship – despite having no experience of playing at that level.

“The manager (Gary Johnson) has told me that I will be given the opportunity,” he said. “Competition for places brings the best out of players because you can’t relax and with Paddy Madden and James Hayter here it’s going to be a test.

Hoskins, who gained League One experience last season in a loan spell with Stevenage, said that Yeovil’s success in the play-offs and with it promotion to The Championship was not the defining reason for him jumping at the chance of moving to Huish Park.

“It wasn’t promotion that swayed me,” he said. “If Yeovil had stayed in League One the opportunity to come here was too good.

“I like the work ethic the club has got and coming to a side which has gained promotion to The Championship is a bonus.”

Hoskins described himself as a “quick” player who liked to get in behind defences.

“If I get a chance in front of goal I will take it,” he added.

Hoskins hopes to improve as a player now that he has the security of a two-year contract with Yeovil.

“It is not a nice feeling being let go by a club,” he said. “So to come to Yeovil on a two-year contract is brilliant for me.

“Everyone knows what pre-season is like and I want to impress everyone here – not just the coaching staff, but the players as well.”

And Hoskins, who was born just down the road from Yeovil at Dorchester, said: “It feels just like home.”
