Family history weekend at Pendomer

FINAL preparations are being made for the first Pendomer Parish and Family History weekend to be held at the end of the month.

The event, on June 29-30, has now been expanded to include an event at neighbouring Hardington Mandeville, the day of their village fete, which, it is hoped, will add to the success of that occasion as well.

Head of the organising committee, David Lovelock, said: ‘’We have had a very good response from locally and farther afield and expect to have a range of items and material that will of appeal to anyone with an interest in local history.’’Family history weekend at Pendomer

The event begins on June 29 at Hardington Mandeville village hall where a morning workshop under the title of ‘Who Went Where, When and How’ will be led by professional researcher and author, Dr Kate Lack.

PHOTO: One of the pictures that came to light is that of the Sunday School class of 1947 taken at the former Pendomer Rectory, now Pendomer House.

Dr Lack will give an introductory talk about the framework which shaped and supported the lives of the people of the local parishes in the past. Later in the session there will be the opportunity to get expert advice on issues concerning your own family researches from a professional.

There are still some places available on this workshop and anyone interested can book online at http://www.pendomer.org.uk/events.html or by contacting David at info@pendomer.org.uk or calling him on 01935-891328.

An exhibition of Pendomer Parish History, which contains a wealth of interesting material and photographs about the parish and its history, will also be on display in the Hardington village hall during the street fayre before being moved to Pendomer’s St Roch church where it can be viewed between 11.30am and 4.30pm on Sunday, June 30, the day of the annual Benefice Open Air Church Service.

This will take place in a field on the road to Pendomer commencing at 10am, or in an adjacent barn in the event of bad weather and, as always, anyone who would like to attend would be most welcome.  Barbecue lunches will be available adjacent to the church from 12noon and light refreshments served all afternoon.

David would still like to hear from anyone who may have yet more Pendomer memorabilia to offer.

‘This is the first time we have staged this event so we hope it will appeal to anyone interested in this fascinating corner of South Somerset,’ he said.
