YEOVIL Town moved to within a whisker of the play-off spots yesterday with a 3-0 victory over Brentford in the npower League One at HuishPark.

Brentford arrived at HuishPark for the game in fourth-place and they were possibly the better of the two teams in the opening half-an-hour of the contest.

But the turning point came in the 34th minute when striker Paddy Madden broke the deadlock to gain his 15th goal of the season – in somewhat fortuitous circumstances, it has to be said.

A Brentford clearance hit Yeovil’s Kevin Dawson and the ball ran into the path of Madden who cleverly chipped the ball over visiting keeper Simon Moore and into the net.

But there was nothing fortuitous about Yeovil’s second goal of the afternoon – a superb 30-yard smash from midfielder Ed Upson, who was celebrating his 100th appearance for the club, coming just a few minutes after the opener.

Brentford had their fair share of chances, but keeper Marek Stech was again in good shot-stopping form for the Glovers.

Yeovil defended resolutely in the second period as Brentford looked to get back into the game, but play became more difficult as the HuishPark pitch began to cut up badly.

But the Glovers finally secured the three points in the 84th minute when Dan Burn volleyed home from inside the box when he latched onto Jamie McAllister’s free-kick.

It was another solid performance by the Glovers and the players and management team were delighted at the final whistle.

The win leaves Yeovil in seventh spot, but now level on points with sixth-placed Sheffield United. Just four points separate Yeovil from third-placed AFC Bournemouth, while they are just eight points adrift of co-leaders Tranmere Rovers and Doncaster Rovers.

Yeovil are on a roll and the bandwagon moves on to Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night where the Glovers will be coming up against a team struggling down in 20th position.

But that will not be an easy game as Oldham will have a new man in charge of team affairs on Tuesday after manger Paul Dickov left the club yesterday – just a week after he led his side to a famous FA Cup Fourth Round win over Liverpool.

Football is a funny old game and, for the time being, there are plenty of smiles among Yeovil Town fans.
