Football: Johnson left 'gutted' at cup defeat

YEOVIL Town manager Gary Johnson (pictured) was left bitterly disappointed last night after seeing his team fall out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy competition.

The Glovers suffered last-minute heartbreak when David Mooney struck in stoppage time to give hosts Leyton Orient a 1-0 win in their Southern Area semi-final showdown at Brisbane Road.

While Orient, managed by former Yeovil boss Russell Slade, can still dream of a potential trip to Wembley for the final with the winners of the Northern Area section of the competition, the Glovers have been left to think about 'what might have been.'

Johnson, speaking to the BBC after the game, said that his players performed well below what they were capable of and said it was extremely disappointing.

"They've got to learn how to be winners  in these types of competitions," he said "There's no lack of effort but it's about going beyond the call of duty.

"We didn't do that and that's why some of these lads  haven't got much if a CV - they haven't won anything yet. We've got some soul searching to do."

Johnson added: "I'm really gutted. We worked very hard to get the supporters here. As a club, we all saw it as a good one to get through but we knew Orient would have something to say about that.

"We didn't do very well and our supporters did a lot better than us."

Johnson and others within the club had helped to fund free coach transport for Yeovil fans travelling to the game. Eleven coaches set off from Huish Park for the match, while a total of 815 Yeovil fans were at the game for the tie out of an overall attendance of 2,755.

There was no hiding Johnson's disappointment - but if there were any positives for him to take from the defeat, was the support he and the team received from the supporters.

Sometimes the motivator needs motivating himself...and the fans will lift him.
