Skittles: Massive shock in Mills West Cup as Yeovil Sports League champs Hammers are dumped out

THERE was a sensational game at the Marston Inn in the Third Round of the Mills/West Knockout Cup in the Yeovil Sports Skittles League where lowly Division Five side Marston Boys took on the triple champions Hammers from Division One.

Skittles: Massive shock in Mills West Cup as Yeovil Sports League champs Hammers are dumped out

It was a real David v Goliath cup tie and at the halfway stage it looked as if the Hammers were comfortably placed to move through to the quarter-finals of the competition with a 12-pin lead.

But Marston Boys, who had only won one game prior to the cup tie this season, knocked an excellent 81-hand to wipe out that deficit and take an unexpected lead.

They then followed that with hands of 72 and 71 and left Hammers to get 79 to win.

It was a tough order, but not an impossible task, especially for a team of the calibre of the Hammers.

They made a superb effort, but just fell short to go down by nine pins. Last man John Westlake made a great effort to get the 27 he needed with 17, but it was just too much come the end.

Kim Davey had the top score of the night with the following hand of 9, 7, 14, 11, 15 and 9 to total 65. Mike Sproston with 59 and John Westlake with 57 also shone for the Hammers.

R. Jenkins starred for Marston Boys with 57 in a really superb all-round team effort.

Legendary league spokesman Tony Martin said: ‘’Every member of the Marston team hit 50-plus which must be a record. In 41 years of doing this job I cannot recall a bigger shock result than this.’’

As a result of this fine performance the Marston Boys have another giant-killing task to produce when they take on another Division One title challenger, ODS, who are currently third in the top flight.

The big match of the Third Round saw high-flying Nightcrawlers suffer a heavy 65-defeat against fellow Division One side Yellow Wagtail B.

Third Round results from the Mills/West Cup: Yellow Wagtail B 384, Nightrcrawlers 319; Rejects 327, Split Pins 302; Marston Boys 416, Hammers 407; Crocs Lot 336, ODS 386; Rovers 324, Knights 306; Misfits 352, Able Eight 324.

Other merit scores: A. Mattravers (Yellow Wagtail B) 59; N. Garrett (ODS) 57; J. Hulbert (Able Eight) 55; M. Tucker (Misfits) 54.
