GLOVERS FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Burton Albion 2, Yeovil Town 1 - April 14, 2002

WELCOME to the Glovers Flashback Friday feature where we look back at a Yeovil Town game on this day in history from down the years.

In this game we go back 15 years and although it will be unusual for Flashback Friday to feature a game in which the Glovers lost – the 2-1 defeat at Burton Albion on April 14, 2002, was still a celebration.

It was the second leg of the Semi-Final of the FA Trophy and Yeovil went into the game – led by manager Gary Johnson - with a 4-0 advantage thanks to an immense performance in the first leg eight days previously at Huish Park.

So although it was disappointing to have lost on the day it was still a 5-2 victory on aggregate to mean that Yeovil had reached the Final of the FA Trophy for the first time in the club’s existence.

Yeovil went into the game at Eton Park – which was watched by a crowd of 4,026 – knowing they just had to remain calm and collected and protect their 4-0 advantage.

The first-half finished 0-0 which virtually assured Yeovil of a safe passage through to the Final.

Dale Anderson gave Burton a 1-0 lead on 53 minutes, but any thoughts of a dramatic comeback were ruled out when Carl Alford equalised for the Glovers on 57 minutes.

Although Burton went back ahead on 72 minutes through Farrell, there was no stopping Yeovil from claiming their place in the FA Trophy Final.

Yeovil, as all fans will know, went on to win the Final at Villa Park with a 2-0 success over Stevenage Borough in front of an 18,809 crowd on Sunday, May 12, 2002, with goals from Carl Alford and Adam Stansfield.

And – for the record – the scorers in the first leg semi-final 4-0 thumping of Burton on Saturday, April 6, 2002, were Kim Grant, Nick Crittenden, Michael McIndoe and Chris Giles. A crowd of 5,614 was at Huish Park.

It was a momentous period in the history of Yeovil Town Football Club.
