GLOVERS NEWS: FA Cup heartbreak for Yeovil Town

YEOVIL Town suffered FA Cup heartbreak last night (Tuesday, January 19, 2016) at Huish Park losing 5-4 to Carlisle United in a dramatic penalty shootout and so missing out on a lucrative Fourth Round tie at home to Premier League outfit Everton.

The game had finished 1-1 after extra-time although Yeovil could have won it deep into stoppage time of the opening 90 minutes when Francois Zoko missed a penalty with what was – quite simply – an awful spot-kick.

How that miss would come back to haunt the Glovers.

Extra-time came and went although it did see Yeovil’s Alex Lacey sent off for serious foul play on 98 minutes and then followed six minutes later by Carlisle’s Luke Joyce for a second bookable offence.

And so it came down the inevitable penalty shootout. Ryan Dickson, Shaun Jeffers, Ben Tozer and Kevin Dawson all scored Yeovil’s opening four spot-kicks, as did Carlisle’s Jason Kennedy, Antony Sweeney, Charlie Wyke and Jabo Ibehre.

With the scores level at 4-4 there was huge disappointment for Matt Dolan and Yeovil when he saw his penalty hit the post which left Mark Ellis to convert his spot-kick to give Carlisle the win.

During normal time Yeovil had taken a first-half lead through Jack Compton on 31 minutes, but Carlisle levelled with 13 minutes to go through Antony Sweeney.

Yeovil many have missed out on a money-spinning £250,000 tie with Everton in the Fourth Round on Sunday, January 31, 2016, in front of the live TV cameras, but manager Darren Way and his players can now fully concentrate on Football League survival with the Glovers in the relegation zone of League Two.

It is a cliché…..but it is true.

A big plus point for Yeovil last night, however, was to see midfielder Kevin Dawson make a playing return. The popular Irishman has been out of action for more than a year through injury, but came on as an 87th minute substitute for Jack Compton.

Also on the bench, albeit as an unused substitute, was fellow midfielder Simon Gillett who too has been absent through injury for more than 12 months.

The return of Dawson and Gillett could prove crucial to Yeovil’s chances of beating off relegation.
