Rob retains conker crown at Brewers Arms!ROB Gass is bonkers for conkers - that is official!

Intense competition at the Brewers Arms - an official sponsor/advertiser of the Yeovi Press - at South Petherton today (Sunday, October 13, 2013) saw 20 conker players do battle in competition.

But it was Rob who took the Conker Crown for a second year running when he beat Charlotte Pearce in the final.

A spokesman for the Brewers Arms said: "We'd like to thank everyone who took part today in the tournament to show that the game of conkers is as popular as ever!"

The origins of conkers date back to the early 1820s, but in 2000 a survey of British schools showed that many were not allowing children to play conkers as head teachers were afraid of the legal consequences if children were injured while playing the game.

Thankfully, the Brewers Arms has no such concerns on the long-held tradition of conkers.

But it is understood that the Brewers' champion Rob has some way to go to beat world record-breaker Eamonn Dooley, of Ireland, who smashed a whopping 306 conkers in one hour.
