Gemini and Harlequin named joint winners of Ilminster Carnival 2013

THERE was no separating the big two at last night’s (Saturday, October 5, 2013) Ilminster Carnival as the town’s Harlequin CC and Gemini CC were named joint winners.

While Gemini CC led the parade with the fantastic tableau of La Barricade based on turbulent France in the 1800s, the club’s arch rivals Harlequin CC brought up the rear of the procession with City of Rock and heavy metal music.

The two themes could not have been more contrasting, but each cart had thousands of people who lined the streets of Ilminster spellbound.

The results echoed those thoughts with both clubs taking a clutch of awards and they were named joint winners of the best local entry category and the Challenge Cup on a night when Ilminster Carnival was blessed with perfect dry weather conditions.

But there was a lot more to Carnival than just Gemini and Harlequin – although they will take all the plaudits.

The ever-popular walking group Xtreme CC picked up a number of awards for their entry Xtraterrestial.

Harbourside CC won the comic class with Santa’s Vacation, while The Wonders CC won the open category with Rockstar.

Andy Tizzard took top honours in the adult single class with Flaming Hot, Hot, Hot. The juvenile single class award was won by Rio Welsh with Winter Comes to Fairyland.

The Chard Goldstars claimed first place in the keenly-contested battle of the majorettes, while A & A CC won the pairs category with Woof.

Club 2000 CC won the youth category with Vampire Desire while Rascals CC came runners-up with Show Boat.

But the Carnival action moves to Chard next Saturday (October 12, 2013) and all eyes will be on to see whether it will be Gemini CC or Harlequin CC who emerge as top dogs.
