Football: Yeovil Town await the fixtures

IT does not matter how old you are or what team you support; the publication of the fixtures for the new season is always an exciting moment for any football fan.

For Yeovil Town supporters this takes on extra significance tomorrow (Wednesday, June 19) when they find out the running order of games for the Glovers’ first-ever campaign in the second tier of English football, The Championship.

Tonight is like the football version of Christmas Eve – wondering who your team will be facing on the first day of the season.

Yeovil fans have been predicting, hoping, guessing who the opponents will be on August 3 – Leeds United at Elland Road; Wigan Athletic at Huish Park; QPR at Loftus Road; Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park; a summer trip to Blackpool?

Who cares? All will be revealed tomorrow morning with the publication of the fixtures – it will be like Christmas Day morning and unwrapping your presents.

For many the very fact that Yeovil Town are in The Championship is still sinking in and the memories of May 19 and that never to be forgotten League One Play-Off victory over Brentford at Wembley Stadium still burns brightly in the mind.

For many supporters of the Glovers’ new opponents they too are coming to terms with the fact that their team will be meeting Little Old Yeovil in competitive league action.

But tomorrow the thoughts of whether this is all a dream will come to an end with the publication of the fixtures.

The very fact that the First Round of the Capital One Cup was made on Monday and Yeovil were given an away trip to Southend United barely raised a whisper with all eyes on the publication of the league fixtures  says it all really.

This is no fantasy, but fact. Yeovil Town will be there in The Championship; not by chance; not by luck; but on merit and hard work.
