Me & My Girl with the YAOS

Yeovil Amateur Operatic Society opened tonight with its latest production - the ever-popular musical Me & My Girl.

The story revolves around an unapologetically and unrefined cockney gentleman named Bill Snibson (played by Shaun Driver) who learns that he is the 14th heir to the Earldom of Hareford.

But he will only receive his inheritance if his relations approve of him.

There are some that feel that with a little grooming, Bill will be suitable to inherit the title - and the money; although he needs to break up with his cockney girlfriend Sally (played by Jennifer Holland-Brewer).

The opening performance was tonight (Tuesday, March 12) and it will run until Saturday, March 23, with shows nightly at 7.30pm and a 2.30pm matinee show on Saturday, March 16. The show is being directed by Jeremy Tustin, while Gill Merrifield is musical director.

''Working on this production has been a joy from beginning to end,'' she said. ''The exceptionally talented princpal line-up has truly brought this hilarious script and score to life.''

YAOS chairman Anthony Dexter added: ''The cast have been working hard around the clock with this show.''

There are some strong performances among the cast with Shaun Driver excellent as the lead role of Bill Snibson, well-supported by Jennifer Holland-Brewer as Sally Smith.

And Will Poulton puts in a great display as Gerald alongside Marie Brolly as Lady Jaquie.

But it would be wrong to highlight too many individual characters when the entire cast of YAOS' production of Me & My Girl should take a well-deserved bow.
