Racing: Great opening to 2013 at Wincanton

Racing: Great opening to 2013 at WincantonWINCANTON Racecourse staged its first 2013 fixture with the entire card once again generously sponsored by Bathwick Tyres and the two showcase contests live on Channel 4.

The opening race, Bathwick Tyres Bridgwater Novices Hurdle, run over two miles six furlongs was won by uncle and nephew duo, Paul Nicholls (pictured) and Harry Derham, with the six-year-old Benvolio.

Derham, 18, rode a cracking finish to steal the prize in the home straight from Tom O’Brien on Sammys Gone.  Adding to the home victory was the recently formed syndicate Dobson, Sutton and Woodhouse – all local Somerset restaurateurs.

Caroline Sutton, from Cuckington, said: “Six months ago, Steve came home one evening announcing that he had brought a racehorse (Benvolio) and given that we were refurbishing our Gillingham restaurant, I wasn’t best impressed!  I am now and look forward to celebrating with a glass of champagne this evening.”

The exciting Bathwick Tyres Handicap Chase run over two miles five furlongs on soft going saw ten runners line up.  Tom Scudamore on board 5—6 favourite, Gevrey Chambertin – full brother to Grands Crus, won easily before making a speedy helicopter trip to Chepstow in time for the Coral Welsh National.

Big Fella Thanks re-entered the winners enclosure for Paddy Brennan and Tom George in the Class 2 Handicap Chase.  The winnable handicap rating and return to shorter distance was a strong advantage.

Other winners on the day included Yeovil-based racegoers - Andy and Lesley Taylor – who became proud owners of a brand new £8,000 Suzuki Alto SZ 5-door courtesy of F.J. CHALKE and through a Wincanton Racecourse 2012 Boxing Day initiative.

Lesley said: “Twenty-five years ago, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and my movement has been severely hindered, so for peace of mind we always book hospitality and raceday tickets at Wincanton in advance.  The customer service is excellent with the most friendly on-course atmosphere.

“This car is a real blessing for us - my former vehicle is ten-years-old and needs money spending on it – now I won’t have too!  I plan to enjoy my new Suzuki Alto and treat myself to a warm summer holiday which will aid my joints.”

Wincanton will stage two further January racedays – Thursday, January 17, for the exciting re-programmed Higos Insurance Somerset National and Thursday, January 31. For both meetings all Hospitality Boxes bookings are half price.

General manager, Steve Parlett, said: “The discounted hospitality boxes are proving very popular and we look forward to attracting a super crowd to celebrate the New Year.

“Nothing can beat the experience of a day at the races and this offer opens up the joys of hospitality to everyone.  To book call the Racecourse office on 01963 32344.”
