Football: Caulker does Yeovil Town proud

FORMER Yeovil Town defender Steven Caulker made his first full England appearance last night in the 4-2 friendly defeat at Sweden.   Football: Caulker does Yeovil Town proud

Caulker, 20, was a massive hit when he topped the appearance-chart for the Glovers with 46 games during a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur in the 2009-10 campaign.

It was evident even back then to many Yeovil fans that a big future laid in front of the teenager who belied his age with countless confident and assured performances at the heart of the Glovers defence. It was no surprise when he won a clutch of player-of-the-season awards.

His career has progressed well with further loan spells at Bristol City and Swansea City and he was also a member of the Team GB in the 2012 Olympics, while now he is making it into the Spurs first team.

Last night saw him start in the England line-up and he put the team 2-1 up in the 38th minute when he prodded home from close range a Steven Gerrard free-kick.

Caulker was subbed with England still 2-1 up in the 74th minute.

The match, which was held to officially open the new Swedish national stadium, then took a spectacular twist as Zlatan Ibrahimovic won the game for the hosts by hitting goals in the 77th, 84th and 90th minutes - including an amazing overhead effort - to compliment his earlier effort to give them a 4-2 victory.

Ironically Caulker had been marking Ibrahmimovic before being subbed. Considering what happened after Caulker went off, you could say that the former Yeovil Town lad had done a pretty good job.

The Yeovil Press would like to congratulate Caulker on his England debut, even more so with fans confident in the belief that he is the first player to have gone on to play for the English national side after playing for the Glovers.
