Racing: Local rules at Wincanton

TOP local trainers and jockeys stole the limelight on Wincanton’s Badger Ales raceday on Saturday (November 10).   Racing: Local rules at Wincanton

Milborne Port-based trainer, Colin Tizzard (pictured left), scooped the opening race with an impressive seven length victory with King’s Lad while favourite, Mr Mole, finished a tired second.

The delighted jockey, Joe Tizzard, explained: “What a result, we’ve had an awesome week and the horses are flying.”

TV presenter, Jeremy Kyle, became winning owner with Fairy Rath.

Paul Nicholls’ luck came in for the fifth race, the prestigious totepool.com Elite Hurdle Race, with an outstanding weight performance by high-class hurdler Zarkandar.   Racing: Local rules at Wincanton

Despite a 17lb difference, Zarkandar, who made a cleaner jump of the last, beat stable mate Prospect Wells by a neck.

The champion trainer Nicholls (pictured right) said: “I told both set of owners, win or draw, I wanted to run their horses today as they will come on for the run.

“I’m delighted with Zarkandar who was wrong last year and I’ve never seen him look so good.  This race has put him right back to where we want to be with the Bula hurdle our next target.  Prospect Wells has run up to his best and it’s a shame there had to be a loser.  Ruby thought the 17lb advantage would swing it – a trip further will suit him.”

It was third time lucky for 5-1 The Package trained by David Pipe who delivered a class performance to win the Badger Ales Trophy.  Having summered well at Timmy Murphy’s pre-training yard, The Package expertly jumped his way to the front and delivered a perfect race.  The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup is the likely next race campaign.

A steward enquiry was called for the final race of the day due to interference between Foggy’s Wall and God’s Own in the home straight, but the result remained unaltered with Foggy’s Wall winning for former Wincanton Chairman and Badger Ales supporter, Mark Woodhouse.

Wincanton’s next race meeting is on Thursday, November 22
