SEVEN races were staged at Wincanton’s Charity Raceday in aid of St Margaret’s Hospice and The Friends of Wincanton Community Hospital.   Racing; Charity race day success at Wincanton

Local Jockey, Nick Scholfield, who took the opening race in style on 13/8 favourite Giveitachance trained by Claire Dyson, said: “He’s come to his own this season, we always thought him a nice horse and a wind operation has certainly helped him.

“Claire has entered Giveitachance this Thursday (Nov 1) and I’m hopeful that he’ll run ahead of his penalty and revised handicap.”

A double was on the card for Bromgrove-trainer Claire Dyson, when 50-1 Boomtown skipped to victory later in the day following a pleasing 9st 7lb weight advantage.

Injured jockey, Ian Popham, sadly missed out on a Wincanton Winner when the effervescent Any Currency Martin Keighley-trained stormed home to win the FJ Chalke Desert Orchid Handicap Chase.

Celebrating the victory, Martin Keighley, said: “Last week, Ian broke his pelvis in four places but thankful surgery wasn’t needed so we’re hopeful for a more speedy recovery.

“We’re delighted with this win and have Sandown’s London National or Aintree’s Beecher Chase in early December as our next target.  He has a big staying chase in him and the John Smith’s Grand National is very much part of our campaign having been first reserved this year.”

Any Currency is owned by a 12-man Dorset-based Cash is King Syndicate.

David Pipe’s helicopter visit to Wincanton was rewarded when Weekend Millionair claimed the Friends of Wincanton Community Hospital Novices Hurdle.

Owned by big Wincanton supporter, Wayne Clifford of Bathwick Tyres, the trainer said: “Wayne brought the horse as a yearling and has been very patient.  He also suggested changing the riding instructions and he’ll be taking out a trainer’s license next!”

Both parties acknowledged that the horse was “spot on” and thoroughly enjoyed the local victory.

The final race of the day, The Paul Nicholls Racing ‘National Hunt’ Novices Hurdle Race provided a 66-1 winner for James Davies on board Chris Brown-trained Kings Flagship.
