CHRISTMAS 2015: Lantern parade and lights switch-on at South Petherton

A LANTERN parade will be among the highlights of the switching-on of the Christmas lights ceremony in South Petherton on Sunday (November 29, 2015).

The lights which will illuminate the centre of South Petherton will be switched-on at 4.30pm and will be followed by the lantern parade.

But there will be plenty of other things to see and do during the afternoon between 2pm and 5pm.

Many of the shops will be open for Christmas trading, while the award-winning Brewers Arms will be hosting its annual craft fair offering plenty of seasonal gift ideas.

There will be stalls and activities in the Blake Hall, Christmas teas in the David Hall arts centre and more crafty fun in Burnworthy.

The Stoke Silver Band will be playing all the Christmas favourites in The Square, while reindeer will be in the churchyard.

A spokesman for the organisers said: “It really is going to be a great afternoon. The shops are open, there will be stalls, live music and lots for all the family to see and do – including our very special real live reindeers.”

Organisers have asked that those taking part in the lantern parade after the switch-on do not use actual flame candles.

Battery-operated tea lights are available in shops and there will be some on sale in the Blake Hall on Sunday priced 50p.

“It would be lovely to see a variety of lanterns on the parade, bought and homemade – go and be creative,” added the spokesman.
