YOUTH RUGBY: Chard Under-9s do the town proud

CHARD Rugby Club’s Under-9s returned home victorious from the Cheddar Festival of Rugby after respectably winning every match they played at this prestigious event.

This aspiring young team has shown incredible commitment and dominance throughout the season and team coach, Andy Maidlow, was hopeful they could prove their worth at the tournament.

In a contest of 12 teams, the squad won each of their five pool matches and then the closely-fought final against the hosts. Outstanding performances were displayed with heroic tackles and some breath-taking tries. However, it was the result of an incredibly mature display of teamwork and tenacity that ultimately won this team the trophy.YOUTH RUGBY: Chard Under-9s do the town proud

Andy Maidlow said: “I could not have wished for a better end to the 2014-15 season. This squad is committed, hard-working and determined, and shows huge promise for the future. Every player deserved their triumph and should feel rightfully proud of their achievements throughout the season, and for this fantastic tournament result.”

Cheddar Festival of Rugby is a major annual event for junior rugby. Chard RFU was proud to send an enthusiastic Under-7s team who enjoyed taking part in their first tournament; an Under-8s squad who acquired themselves admirably but didn’t make it through the pool stages; an Under-10s team whose result did not reflect their determination or quality of rugby and the Under-12s who narrowly missed out on winning the Plate.

Coaches and parents all agreed that Chard players put on a fine display of rugby and all matches were quite simply a pleasure to watch.
