Thousands attend Ham Hill Fair

THE Ham Hill Fair on Saturday (September 7, 2013) has been hailed a success with an estimated 3,000 people attending on the day - despite a heavy downpour of rain at lunchtime threatening to ruin the day.Thousands attend Ham Hill Fair

Visitors were offered a fun day out for all the family and took advantage of the wide range of activities on offer from coin minting, craft activities, warrior training and the mucky activity of helping to build a traditional round house constructed by the country parks ranger team.

Also on site was the opportunity for visitors to have a guided tour of the archaeological dig site which saw nearly 600 visitors find out what has been discovered.

Rangers from the countryside team at South Somerset District Council were overwhelmed at the generosity of the public which means they will, in partnership with the Friends Group of Ham Hill Country Park, can hopefully run a heritage event next summer.

The council's leisure and culture spokesman, Cllr Sylvia Seal, said: "We’re so glad that the fair was enjoyed by so many people and that the weather didn’t put people off.

"Educational events such as the Ham Hill Fair provide such a fascinating look back at the life of those who would have occupied the iron age fort so many years ago.

“We’re very grateful to those members of the public who have helped almost secure the event for next year already.”
