THE ninth Green Scythe Fair will once again be taking place at Thorney Lakes at Muchelney, near Langport, on Sunday, June 9, from 11am.Green Scythe Fair coming soon

The annual event at the height of the haymaking season goes from strength to strength and this year’s will be outstanding.

Events include live hay and willow sculpting with Serena de la Hey, woodland puppets, and the lunchtime debate from 1.30pm to 3pm will be on Our Energy Future with environmental writer Oliver Tickell, anti-fracking campaigner Paul Mobbs and eco-campaigner Cara Naden.

A fair spokesman said: “This truly old-fashioned event in a magical setting on the Somerset Levels runs entirely on wind, sun and muscle-power.

“Besides the celebrated West Country Scythe Championships featuring stupendous and often hilarious feats of haymaking by international scythesmen and women, mowing a swathe through the summer scene, there is also excellent live music, around 70 stalls of traditional craft and produce, lively speakers and campaign stalls.

“There will also be delicious organic local food and a variety of the best ales and ciders.”

The spokesman added: “There will also be an exciting children’s area with pedal-powered Scalelectrix and heaps of hay to play in.”

Tickets are priced £5 on the gate and it is free for accompanied children. Parking is limited with a suggested donation of £1.
