GOLF: Barrie and Brian win seniors stableford at Cricket St Thomas Golf Club

A FIELD of 44 senior players entered the 4Ball Better Ball stableford competition on Monday (August 8, 2016) at Cricket St Thomas Golf Club near Chard.

In conditions which appeared to suit the golfers, no less than nine pairs out of the 22 starters achieved 40 points or more.

Amongst the early starters, Roger Withers and partner set the pace returning a score of 44 points. This was later matched by Roger Stone’s side, but failed to produce a better back 9.

Later in the day Barrie Heath and Brian Hodder went one better with 45 to take the day’s prize.

Thirty-three seniors from Cricket St Thomas were in the draw for a Bowmaker yellow ball competition on Wednesday (August 10, 2016).

Of the 11 trios, five managed to lose their yellow ball which made life very difficult as no double scores could count subsequent to the loss.

Maurice Arnold’s team kept a tight grip on his yellow ball which enabled him to register a very creditable 125 points, enough for a win by seven points. Keith Potter’s side came second with a hefty 118 points, 11 points in front of Ted Bryden’s team who finished in third position.

Results: 1 Maurice Arnold, Roger Stone and Stuart Seery 125pts; 2 Keith Potter, Bob Rees and Stuart Forbes 118pts; 3 Ted Bryden, Brian Hodder and Barry Singleton 107pts.

The main event of the week was the Seniors Championship which took place on Friday (August 12, 2016).

This is an individual medal competition with the cup for the best gross score and one for the best net score. Both Sid Crisp and Bernie Skeels returned to the club house having posted scores of 70 net, which was par for the course. This was beaten later in the day by Mark Cording who recorded a net score of three under par, 67 to win the net competition.

Jonny Bloys scored a gross 82 to finish in second spot in the gross competition, but could not touch Danny Dowell’s 78 who clinched top spot.

Results: Championship (Gross Competition) Winner – Danny Dowell 78; Runner-up – Jonny Bloys 82.

Championship (Net Competition) Winner – Mark Cording 67; Runner-up – Sid Crisp 70.
