TENNIS: Free taster sessions at local clubs

TENNIS clubs across South Somerset and Yeovil Recreation Centre will be opening their doors over the summer to offer free tennis taster sessions.

With tennis fever set to grip the nation once more with Wimbledon, local clubs will be holding the sessions over three weekends.

Free tennis will be available on May 16-17, June 13-14 and August 1-2, 2015, and the initiative by the Lawn Tennis Association is part of the Great British Tennis Weekend, which will see over 1,500 park sites and tennis clubs across the country open up for free.

The council’s senior sports and healthy lifestyles officer, Jake Hannis, said: “Wimbledon always sees interest in tennis soar and we want to offer everyone an opportunity to try the sport free of charge in a welcoming environment.

“It’s easy to take part, just visit the Great British Tennis Weekend website, choose a location and day near you and then book a slot. Clubs and facilities will provide all the equipment and absolutely anyone can get involved.”TENNIS: Free taster sessions at local clubs

Yeovil Recreation Centre, Yeovil, Queen Camel, Ilminster and Somerton Tennis Clubs have currently signed up and will host free court sessions, coaching, mini tennis, cardio tennis and family events to encourage more people, of all ages, playing the game.

As there are limited spaces available advanced booking is recommended at www.greatbritishtennisweekend.com .

James Deem, regional participation manager at the Lawn Tennis Association, added: “We have an excellent South Somerset Tennis Development Group which is working closely with the tennis clubs across South Somerset to help co-ordinate these weekends.

“You may never have picked up a racket in your life or perhaps your child is looking to try a new sport. All ability levels are welcome.”
