ELECTIONS: Intriguing contests in Chard for SSDC

GLOVES are off in Chard as candidates do battle to win one of five seats up for grabs in the town for a place on South Somerset District Council.

The Avishayes ward is being contested by the Conservative's Peter Amey, Labour's Graham Forsyth, independent candidate Cath Morrison and the LibDems' Garry Shortland.

The Combe ward is a three-way contest between Amanda Broom of the Conservatives, Green Party candidate Jon Lewes and the LibDems' Steve Warwick.

Avishayes is currently represented by the LibDems' Nigel Mermagen, while the Combe ward has been held by the Conservative's Martin Wale.ELECTIONS: Intriguing contests in Chard for SSDC

These two will be going head-to-head in the Blackdown ward where Ros Roderigo is standing down as the Conservative member. The other candidate in Blackdown ward is Neil Arnold of the UK Independence Party.

Jenny Kenton will be hoping to see off the challenge of the Conservative's Paul Bradly to retain the Chard Crimchard ward for the LibDems.

Brennie Halse is looking to maintain Chard Holyrood ward for the Conservatives, although she will have to beat the LibDem candidate Jason Baker at the election.

The fifth Chard seat - Jocelyn - will be a three-way battle between the current independent member Dave Bulmer, Conservative candidate Irene Glynn, and the LibDems' Melanie Hudson.

Chard Combe Ward (1 seat): Amanda Jane Broom (Con); Jon Lewes (Green); Steve Warwick (LibDems).

Chard Crimchard Ward (1 seat): Paul Bradly (Con); Jenny Kenton (LibDems).

Chard Holyrood Ward (1 seat): Jason Paul Baker (LibDems); Brennie Halse (Con).

Chard Jocelyn Ward (1 seat): Dave Bulmer (Ind); Irene Glynn (Con); Melanie Ann Cherry Hudson (LibDems).

Coker Ward (2 seats): Cathy Bakewell (LibDems); Mick Clark (LibDems); Rod Jones (Con); Gina Seaton (Con).
