ELECTIONS: No overall power at SSDC

ELECTIONS: No overall power at SSDC

THREE independent councillors elected to South Somerset District Council hold the trump card as to holds power on the 60-seat authority.

The results from yesterday’s (Thursday, May 7, 2015) local election have been announced this afternoon and neither the Conservatives or the Liberal Democrats hold overall power.

The LibDems gained 29 seats, while the Tories picked-up 28 to mean that the three independents of Cllrs Dave Bulmer, Andrew Turpin and Tony Capozzoli are now the kingmakers of the authority.

They have to decide who to support out of either the LibDems or Conservatives to give a majority.

The LibDems had been holding a 29-25 advantage going into the final result – that of the Yeovil South Ward.

But the Conservatives pulled it out of the hat to take all three seats available in the ward to leave the council with no clear power.

It is understood that the independents now have a couple of weeks in which to discuss and make their minds up on which political group to support.
