SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES: Cricket coaching at Westfield Academy

STUDENTS at Westfield Academy in Yeovil got some great cricketing tips this week from Somerset Cricket Board coach Andrew Skidmore.

Andrew plays cricket for Bridgwater in the West of England Premier League, but also has a role as a Somerset Community Coach, which sees him working with schools and clubs across the county to develop youth cricket.

This is just the latest of several projects to develop cricket within the school.

WestfieldAcademy welcomed England cricketer, Caroline Atkins, into school this time last year too, as part of the ‘Chance to Shine’ programme, which aims to introduce cricket to schools and communities.

Inspired by her visit, the Westfield girls team played in an inter-school competition and cricket has also been introduced as part of inter-House competitions within school.

Students also spent a day watching a Somerset match at the County Ground in Taunton at their Schools Day – and Westfield is now officially an affiliated school.

Andrew Skidmore will be working with students in PE lesson for the next three weeks and also running a club for Yrs 7&8 after school on Wednesdays.
