The Liberal Democrats’ Free School Meals policy, which gives every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 a free school meal, was implemented back in September 2014. As part of this policy, the Government set aside £175m to help schools build kitchens and facilities to deliver hot school meals to children of infant age.

Merriott First School has been given £368,000 from this fund so that they can build a new kitchen and dining facilities for pupils. The school will also be able to use this new modular building for curricular activities like gym.

Yeovil MP David Laws, the Schools Minister, said: “This investment is great news for all the pupils at Merriott School."

"The money will allow the school to build a fantastic kitchen and dining area which will help serve hot meals to all infant age pupils, ensuring that they receive a nutritious meal every single day they are at school," added Mr Laws.

“When we implemented the Liberal Democrat Free School Meals policy we knew that some schools would need help to build extra facilities, which is why we set aside £175m to do just that.

“I am really pleased that Merriott will now be able to build a kitchen and provide healthy, hot meals on site for all their pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.”
