CRICKET: Promotion gained by Westland Sports – now for the title!

CLUB chairman Rob Fox has congratulated Westland Sports’ 2nds on winning promotion to Division Two of the Somerset Cricket League.

“I’d like to congratulate captain Ben Hurlock and his team in gaining promotion to Division Two,” he said.

“Hopefully we can secure the title with a win on Saturday (August 30, 2014) against East Coker.”

It has been a successful season for the Yeovil-based side despite a difficult start when the club made the decision to withdraw from the West of England League and concentrate on nurturing new talent, with the help of some experienced players, with two teams in the Somerset League.

Westland 2nds gained promotion last Saturday with a five-wicket success over Wellington 2nds.

Skipper Ben Hurlock won the toss and elected for his side to bowl and it proved a wise decision as Wellington were bowled out for 118 in under 40 overs.

Dick Reeves was the pick of the bowling attack with 4-18, while D. Holt claimed 3-42.

Westland needed 35 overs to pick-off the runs required with opener Scott Ewens top scoring with 35, while skipper Hurlock knocked 26.

They now travel to second-placed East Coker on Saturday (August 30, 2014) to conclude the season with both teams knowing that a victory will give them the Division Three title.
