COLLEGE SPORT: Buckler’s Mead win football tournament

THE Buckler’s Mead Academy won a football tournament at Yeovil College and players scooped tickets to watch Yeovil Town in action.

The Year 9-10 boys from the school in Yeovil beat Chard’s Holyrood Academy 3-2 in the final of the tournament which was held last month and also featured teams from Ansford Academy and Stanchester Academy.

The winning team received tickets for Yeovil Town’s final game of the 2016-17 season which was held last weekend at Huish Park against Leyton Orient.

Tom Willis, the Yeovil College student organiser, said: “We've enjoyed organising this tournament and it's great to see so many talented players from our local area.”

Buckler’s Mead PE teacher, Stuart Crisp, said: “This has been a fantastic tournament for our players at Yeovil College.

“We've thoroughly enjoyed it and we thank all those for making it happen.”

Holyrood Academy played exceptionally well by winning all of the games, but missed out when they lost the final to Buckler’s Mead.COLLEGE SPORT: Buckler’s Mead win football tournament

Yeovil College is working in a partnership with Yeovil Town Football Club to help support the development of talented footballers within the community.

John Fry, the chairman of Yeovil Town, said: “Every top footballer started out as a grassroots player, so we at Yeovil Town FC are really pleased to be involved with this sort of partnership with Yeovil College, and this community football tournament.

“Once talent is identified, it’s about nurturing it so we help the players with real potential in whatever form that takes.”

Matt Hann, curriculum manager of sport at Yeovil College, added: “Yeovil College is immensely proud to be working with local partners including Yeovil Town Football Club and the schools to provide this great opportunity for our local community.

“We thank the PE teachers for supporting their players in competing in this event. We hope to see many of these talented youngsters make the grade for our successful Men's Football academy which links to YTFC and maybe go on to play for YTFC.”
