SCHOOL NEWS: Parents can play a key role in their children's reading ability

PARENTS of pupils at a primary school have been asked by the headteacher to set aside just ten minutes a day to help with their children’s reading.

Adrian Mitchell, headteacher of Manor Court Primary School in Chard, has made the appeal in the latest school newsletter after consulting with class teachers on what progress was being made with pupils’ learning.

“One thing has stood out – reading,” he told parents in his newsletter column. “The children seem to be struggling to make as much progress as we feel they are capable of and we need to address this situation together.

“We have a limited time in class to fit in all the elements of their learning so any help you can give at home is really appreciated.

“All we ask is that you find ten minutes a day to listen to your children read. This small but important thing would make such a difference to your children becoming the best they can be.

“Being able to read opens so many opportunities and will make maths problems seem easy.”

Mr Mitchell added: “I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of myself, the teachers and the children to say thank you for your continuing support.”

Although the message has been relayed by Mr Mitchell to parents of Manor Court Primary School in Chard – it could be applied by all parents of every single pupil at primary schools across the country.
