RUNNING: Unofficial 10k in Ilminster

RUNNING: Unofficial 10k in Ilminster

RUNNERS gathered in Ilminster town centre on Sunday (November 1, 2015) for an unofficial 10k run – just to show that old habits die hard.

The annual Ilminster Lions Club 10k was cancelled back in 2013 due to an unexpected price hike in administration charges from Somerset County Council.

The 10k had been one of Ilminster’s big events of the year and had been held for more than two decades and during that time it had involved 5,000 runners and helped to raise £50,000 for various charities.

But spiralling costs saw the Lions Club take the difficult decision to cancel the event in 2013 and it has yet to officially return.

Runners did actually take part in an unofficial 2013 10k in Ilminster to “protest” over the price increase and they were out again yesterday to ensure that the town’s 10k is not forgotten.

Just over 30 athletes assembled in the Market Square and took part in the fun run with runners coming from various clubs including Chard, Crewkerne and Yeovil.

The event was organised by Chris and Maria Wadey and proceeds from the run will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.
