SCHOOL AND COLLEGES: Springwatch comes to Bruton

STUDENTS at Bruton School for Girls can now take part in their very own Springwatch - thanks to the generosity of the school’s Parent Staff Association.

The old railway cutting which runs through the school’s site in Sunny Hill in Bruton has been used as a nature area for some time but now it has been converted so that it is fully Wi-Fi enabled, has a tented classroom and even has a ‘cutting cam’ link which streams images from the cutting up to the main school building.

Jane Thomas, the chairman of the PSA, explained: “We are so thrilled that the PSA was able to enhance the facilities in such a practical way and we feel it absolutely ties in with the school’s current Eco-Ambassador status and the whole ethos about being more aware of the environment and our surroundings.

“We wish to thank the BSG Estates and IT teams who worked so hard during the school holidays to completely transform the area into something very special for the children.”

Laura James, teacher of biology and the school’s eco-status coordinator, added: “We love being able to bring lessons to life in this wonderful setting and hope it fosters a life-long appreciation for the environment amongst the girls.

“Whether it’s watching owls swooping, the occasional deer or the blue tits having a peck at the webcam, it is a fabulous way to build learning across additional subjects such as biology and geography as well as our forest school activities.”
