SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES: Great week for budding scientists

BUDDING scientists at Bruton School for Girls have been taken to the stars and back and learnt how to programme robots to do their work as part of National Science Week.

A varied programme of activities to tie in with National Science Week demonstrated how science links in to so many possible future careers has hopefully inspired a few more girls to consider science, engineering and maths at A-Level.

There was an Astro Dome, a huge inflatable globe, inside which the girls were shown the life cycle of stars followed by a visit from STEMwithRobots, an organisation which teaches computer coding and programming with the help of some very friendly robots.

Julia Rostrup, head of physics at Bruton, said: “Being an all-girls school, there are no subjects that are off-limits or seen as typical ‘boy’ subjects.

“With 65% of our current Sixth Form studying either sciences or maths, it shows that our girls really do have the opportunity to shine at the tougher science subjects and follow the path to some extremely exciting careers.

“Science Week has given every girl the opportunity to experience science outside the classroom. It’s amazing to see how these subjects impact virtually every aspect of our lives from nature and understanding the stars or the solar eclipse, to seeing how forensics work at a crime scene, to developing a programme for an app – science touches everything!”
