ELECTIONS: Laws welcomes national minimum wage increase

YEOVIL MP David Laws has welcomed the news that the National Minimum Wage is set to rise by 3% to £6.70 an hour.

This is the largest real-terms increase in the Minimum Wage since 2008, and over 1.4 million workers across the UK will benefit.

Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, also announced that the National Minimum Wage for apprentices will rise by 57p an hour, to £3.30 an hour. This represents a 20% increase.

Mr Laws (pictured above) said: “Liberal Democrats have pushed hard in government for this increase in the National Minimum Wage and I am really pleased that it will now become a reality.

“People in Yeovil and across the country have already benefited from our decision to raise the personal tax allowance to £10,600, and this increase in the National Minimum Wage is another step in the right direction.

“Our economy is recovering, thousands more jobs are being created and our growth figures are better than any other European country. However, we must make sure that this recovery is helping everybody, and raising the Minimum Wage is an important step in achieving this.”

Mr Laws will be hoping to retain the Yeovil constituency for the LibDems at the General Election which is to take place on Thursday, May 7, 2015.
