THE Wessex Wizards Triathlon Club hosted the annual Yeovil Aquathlon today (Sunday, March 1, 2015) at the Goldenstones Leisure Centre.AQUATHLON 2015: Great day for Wessex Wizards Triathlon Club event

This year’s event saw the introduction of a new children’s race alongside the adults race which helped to boost the number of spectators.

The race began with competitors taking part in a swim in the Goldenstones pool before a run around the Yeovil Country Park.

The adults category, with competitors aged 19-plus, along with juniors of 15-16 years and youths of 17-18years swam 400m and then ran 5km. The younger competitors had to complete reduced lengths in both disciplines based on their age groups.

Overall winner of the adult competition was Will Poole in a time of 27minutes and 17 seconds. Richard McLaughlin edged out Lee Carter into second spot by a second – although they were virtually a minute by the winner.

The ladies competition saw victory for Emma Fisher in a time of 30minutes 9 seconds, while Victoria Voysey was second in 31minutes and 14 seconds – a minute ahead of third-placed Matilda Woodard.

Steve Joel, of the organising committee, said: “The race has gradually grown in popularity since it was started by Total Buzz Events and is the perfect introduction to multi sport for children and adults, but most importantly it’s a fun day out, with everyone who completes the course being a winner and receiving a finisher’s medal.”AQUATHLON 2015: Great day for Wessex Wizards Triathlon Club event

The organisers were delighted that 130 people took part in today’s event.

Steve added: “The Goldenstones Leisure Centre is the perfect venue for this swim–run event, with the race starting in the pool before transitioning onto the multi-terrain run, around the beautiful grounds of the Yeovil Country Park beside the centre.”

He said the junior event was a particular highlight. Its introduction follows the increase in the number of triathlon clubs establishing junior sections after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Steve said: “There has been a real boom because it’s such a fun and inclusive sport for kids. If you come along to an event you can see for yourself that they absolutely love the idea and switching between the disciplines and the variety of it all. The support and atmosphere is special.”
