SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES: Bruton girls take biology to heart for Valentine’s Day!

WHILE most teenage girls yesterday (Saturday, February 14, 2015) were opening up their Valentine’s Day cards, Year Ten students at Bruton School for Girls have been getting to grips with hearts in a very different way - they took part in a heart dissection demonstration!SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES: Bruton girls take biology to heart for Valentine’s Day!

As part of their GCSE biology studies, a huge ox heart was used to demonstrate all the intricacies of the workings of the heart chambers and main blood vessels.

The school’s head of biology, Sue Smith, said: “The girls were enthralled to see the heart in all its glory with the aorta, vena cava, pulmonary vessels and heart chambers all clearly visible at close quarters.

“They all said how much it helped their studies to have such a practical way of understanding the structure and mechanism of the heart.”

BrutonSchool for Girls has built up a strong reputation for a high proportion of girls studying STEM subjects (sciences, maths and technology) at GCSE and A-Level with 65% of girls currently studying sciences and maths in the Sixth Form.

Mrs Smith added: “As a teacher you always aim to share the excitement and passion for a subject and to find new ways to bring lessons to life – and I think the heart dissection is one lesson they won’t forget easily!”
