Bowls: Juniors show it's not just a sport for older people!

ANYONE who thinks that bowls is a game for the older person should go and take a look at the thriving junior section of Yeovil Bowls Club.

It is so popular with so many young people actively taking part in the sport that it is virtually full to capacity, although the club would never turn away any youngster wanting to give bowls a go.

Club coach Mo Monkton told Yeovil Press: “The junior club is really thriving and so you can see it certainly isn’t an old people’s sport.

“It’s great to have all these young players because they are the lifeline of the senior club.”

The junior club recently held its annual presentation night: Awards were as follows: Kelly House (Thorne Trophy Ladies Novices Cup); Emily Corner (Under-40s Cliff Young Trophy); Kayley Manns (Under-18s Outdoor Singles); Charmayne Hooper and Kelly House (Under-18s Pairs); Hannah Kemp and Courtney Seers (Under-18s Pairs Runner-Ups); Elisha Hooper (Under-18 Singles Runner-Up).

In addition to that list Jack Goodland and Shannon Crouch won the Under-18s Pairs title at the Weston-super-Mare Open.

Yeovil Junior Bowls Club meets every Monday from 4pm to 6pm at the club in Higher Kingston, Yeovil, Somerset BA21 4AS.

The youngsters certainly have good coaches as Mo is the current England Under-25s team manager, while Edna Bessell MBE is the senior England ladies team manager.
