THE first pupils at a brand new Yeovil primary school have been thoroughly enjoying the ride with shiny golden bus tickets, lively songs and games.

Kingfisher Primary School opened with a reception class of 27 pupils this September. It is being hosted on the Huish Primary School site in Yeovil until the new Kingfisher building is ready to move into on the edge of town at Lufton.VIDEO AND PHOTOS: Kingfisher pupils’ school bus is just the ticket Photo 1

The children’s school bus journeys – provided by Somerset County Council for Kingfisher Primary pupils who travel in from the new school’s catchment area – have become a real highlight of their school day. They have now been captured in a heart-warming video, filmed by the school and available to watch on YouTube – click on the link above to watch.

Cllr Frances Nicholson, spokesman for children and families at Somerset County Council, said: “Starting school is a very big step for children to take, and catching a bus makes it that little bit bigger.

“So I’m delighted that the school and South West Coaches have thrown themselves so whole-heartedly into making the children feel welcome and the bus journey an exciting adventure.”

Headteacher Lucy Crowe said: “The school bus has been a huge success! The children are always ready to travel to school and to travel home at the end of the day. Before every journey, the children are given their special golden tickets to show to the bus driver.

“Our journeys on the bus are a wonderful adventure, with singing, chatting, a game or two of ‘Eye Spy’, and for some, a little sleep.VIDEO AND PHOTOS: Kingfisher pupils’ school bus is just the ticket Photo 2

“Parents happily wave their children off to school and enthusiastically greet them at the end of the day. There is always a member of staff on the bus and parents have been given a direct transport number so they can have pass on messages even during the journey!”

And it is not just the journey on the bus they are enjoying – all the children have embraced their current home on the Huish Primary School site while they look forward to moving to their new school building.

As an academy, Kingfisher Primary School’s sponsor is the enthusiastic Preston Primary Academy Trust, which also runs Preston Primary School in Yeovil.

Planning permission for the build was agreed in July 2016. The school’s current expected latest completion date is February 2018.
