THE Heritage of the Ile Trust will be holding a workshop at the Meeting House in Ilminster on Saturday, August 15, 2015, from 10am until 12.30pm to allow people to take a wander down memory lane.

There will be an opportunity for visitors to see a selection of the Trust’s pictures and there will be a competition to recognise scenes from the past.CLUBS AND SOCIETIES: History in photos - thanks to the Heritage of the Ile Trust

There will also be a slideshow running on a large screen.

If anyone has any old photos they would like to share with the trust they should bring them along to the workshop where they can be copied. The Trust is in the process of setting up a website to allow the public on-line access to a selection of these.

There will also be copies of the Trust’s books “Images of the Past” on sale.

The Heritage of the Ile Trust was formed in 1976 when well-known local solicitor Jeffrey Duke realised historic photographs were being destroyed when client estates were being disbursed. Records and photographs were to be held by the Trust “for the preservation of the local history of Ilminster and district and for the display and study by all persons interested therein”.

Initially all records were kept as hard copies but with the coming of the electronic age all hard copies are now kept by the Somerset Heritage Centre where they are stored in a temperature and atmosphere environment to ensure their long term survival. Digital copies of over 5,000 photos are held by the Trust.

The Trust is regularly offered newly discovered pictures and is able to copy these and add them to the collection. Many such discoveries are brought along to the Trust’s annual workshop.

Images of present day Ilminster are also being added to the collection for future generations to access.
