CLUBS AND SOCIETIES: Charity luncheon a big success again for Yeovil Round Table

SNOOKER legend Steve Davis was the guest speaker at Yeovil Round Table’s 14th annual charity lunch.

Davis, who dominated the sport during the 1980s and won the World Championship six times, entertained around 130 diners at the Manor Hotel in Yeovil with amusing anecdotes about his career, some of the characters within snooker and obviously made reference to himself being nicknamed Interesting.

The charity luncheon is a key event in the Yeovil Round Table calendar and helps to raise thousands of pounds for charity each year.

This year was no exception and an auction – carried out by auctioneer Henry Simon of the Piers Simon Appeal and School in a Bag charity – amassed around £20,000 on its own.

Past chairman Steve Farnham thanked everyone at the luncheon yesterday (Friday, November 20, 2015) for their support during his year of office in which the Round Table was able to raise a vast amount of money for a variety of charities and organisations.

Donations made by the Round Table in the previous year included £5,000 to St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, £3,000 to Macmillan Nurses, £2,500 to Julia’s House, £2,500 to the South West Children’s Hospice, £3,000 to Yeovil Opportunity Playgroup, £2,000 to the School in a Bag project, £2,000 to Yeovil Day Care Centre, £2,000 to the Round Table’s Children’s Wish initiative, £2,000 to the Yeovil and District Samaritans, £1,500 to the Lord’s Larder, and £2,500 to the South Somerset MIND group.CLUBS AND SOCIETIES: Charity luncheon a big success again for Yeovil Round Table

Yeovil Round Table chairman Ashley Helyar said: “I would like to thank our event sponsors and the local businesses and private individuals who have again been so generous in providing a great selection of auction lots.

“Over the years Yeovil Round Table membership has been steady but we are always looking for new members aged between 18 and 45.

“We need people who are prepared to put a small amount of their personal time into helping others, whilst having a great social time with various events including an occasional night out drinking!”

The group’s newest member Martyn Pike said grace before diners tucked into an excellent four-course meal.
