SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES: Kathakali visit for Greenfylde pupils

GREENFYLDE First School pupils in Ilminster have enjoyed a visit from the Kala Chethena Kathakali Company.

The company describe Kathakali as ancient and classical in nature and holds centuries of tradition and culture.

It is not simply a dance-drama but an act of devotion featuring the universal struggle between good and evil.SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES: Kathakali visit for Greenfylde pupils

Kathakali provides a window into the past and an opportunity to understand the ancient traditions that have been preserved for centuries in the Kathakali plays.

Greenfylde’s headteacher Claire Oaten said: “This was an amazing opportunity to learn more about the Hindu faith and culture and see a cast of performers bringing the stories to life through their dance-drama.

“The children were fascinated by the costumes and make up and our Year 4 pupils were fortunate in having workshops with the performers for drumming and dance.

“Bringing in performances like these allows our children to understand more about cultural heritage and understand the rich traditions that exist within our world.”

“They had a lot of respect for the performers and were in awe of their talents,” she added.
