SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES: Invitation for all former Westfield students

SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES:

WESTFIELD Academy in Yeovil is to hold a special Open Event next month in order to commemorate the school’s 170th anniversary.

Westfield can trace its roots back to 1845. Now former students of Yeovil School, Yeovil High School for Girls, Summerleaze Park and Westfield Community School are invited to an Open Event at the school on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at 7pm.

The event is being organised by a group of Year 11s, as part of their annual legacy project. Each year, the principal sets the students a task to organise an event that will leave a lasting legacy once they have moved on.

Previous projects have included last year’s charity bike ride which raised more than £2,000 and a successful world record party popping challenge which saw Westfield becoming a Guinness World Record holder!

The students this year were really interested in the history of Westfield. Yeovil School was founded in 1845 and Summerleaze Park at the start of the war in 1939. Two decades later in 1959, the Yeovil Girls’ School moved to the Stiby Road site. These three schools then merged in 1974 to become Westfield Community School.

Year 11 student, Georgia Silcox, said: “The whole school will be getting involved during the day on July 9 - taking part in lessons based around the four key dates in Westfield’s history of 1845, 1939, 1959 and 1974.”

Fellow Year 11 student Cade Morant added: “Students will be invited to dress up in clothes from the different periods and get to experience what life was like in school in those days.”

Then, later in the day, former students are invited back for an entertaining evening, where they will get the chance to see how things have changed throughout the years. They will also be able to look at fascinating documents and artefacts from the school's history and hopefully meet old friends!

Dan King added: “This year’s legacy project is about bringing everyone connected to the school together to celebrate.”

Another student, Beth Irvine, said: “I’m so excited to meet people who were at the school years ago – and I can’t wait to hear all about their experiences.”

Guests are asked to book their place in advance. To find out more and reserve a place at the evening event, go to: www.westfieldacademy.co.uk or www.facebook.com/westfieldacademyyeovil. Alternatively, contact Lisa Jeffreys on 01935-423 747.
