ELECTIONS: Church funding welcomed by Marcus Fysh

CONSERVATIVE candidate for the Yeovil constituency, Marcus Fysh, has welcomed news that £130,000 is to become available for much-needed repair works on local churches.

Mr Fysh is delighted that the Chancellor of the Exchequer has made funds available for church repairs up and down the country.

These repairs will help prevent further damage to these important buildings – ensuring they are preserved for generations to come.

The parish church at Stoke-sub-Hamdon will receive £56,400, Hardington church will get £50,700, Norton-sub-Hamdon £12,300 and £10,800 to Stocklinch near Ilminster. A total of £130,200.ELECTIONS: Church funding welcomed by Marcus Fysh

Mr Fysh is also pleased that a further £88,300 will go to St Andrew’s Church at Chardstock which is just over the Devon/Somerset border near Chard and falls in the East Devon constituency.

Mr Fysh said: “I’m delighted to hear that the churches of St Mary the Virgin in Hardington Mandeville, Stoke-sub-Hamdon and Norton-sub-Hamdon, and the churches of St Mary Magdalen in Stocklinch and St Andrew in Chardstock will at the Chancellor's request receive £218,000 between them to fund repairs,” he said.

“These churches are important focal points of our community and this money will help ensure they are there for future generations, as they have been for many centuries past.”

And Mr Fysh added: “The only reason we can afford this investment is because of the action Conservatives have taken to fix the economy. The alternatives all mean economic chaos – and Britain unable to afford this kind of work to protect our national heritage.”

Chancellor, George Osborne, said: “Churches and Cathedrals are a unique part of our national heritage, and play a vital role in community life – we want to support them, and thanks to our long-term economic plan, we can.

“Whether it’s our country’s future or these important buildings, the sun is shining and we’re starting to fix the roof.”
