ELECTIONS: Chancellor congratulates Yeovil's Conservative champion

THE Chancellor of the Exchequer has described the Conservative candidate for the Yeovil constituency at the General Election, Marcus Fysh, as a “strong champion” for the constituency.

George Osborne’s budget today (Wednesday, March 18, 2015) confirmed the Conservatives’ plans for investment in infrastructure in the South West worth £7.2-billion.

They include major investments in dualling the A303 and A358 corridor and new rail investment which will increase opportunities in the Yeovil area.ELECTIONS: Chancellor congratulates Yeovil's Conservative champion

Mr Osborne said: “Marcus Fysh is a strong champion for the Yeovil constituency. He consistently makes the case for investment in local infrastructure.

“Thanks to our long term economic plan we are investing a total of £7.2 billion on transport infrastructure in the region, and at the Budget I have confirmed a new rail franchise which will bring intercity express trains and great improved rail services to the South West.

“We have also asked South West Peninsula Task Force on rail to look at the Exeter-Salisbury rail line.

“This study will look at how to further increase seats, services and capacity on this key route into the South West, which could be a significant benefit to local residents in the Yeovil constituency."

Mr Fysh, the Tories prospective MP for Yeovil, added: “This is great news for local people. Infrastructure investment is a critical part of my plan to improve our local area.

“It will bring jobs that help ensure our families' security, and make Somerset an even better place to live and work.

“I've already had success in recent weeks getting Yeovil Pen Mill and Yeovil Junction rail services put firmly on the upgrade list for South West Trains. This news is in addition to that.”

Mr Fysh added: “Let's stick with our plan that is delivering sound finances and a strong economy that allows us to make investments like this, and protect services like health and education.”

The General Election will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2015.
